Sanatan-Dharma View on the great flood (Noah’s Ark)

The Vedic scriptures do not mention anything about a worldwide flood that took place around 4,348 years ago.

The Holy Bible

Based on Genesis 6 and 7, there was a flood around 4,348 years ago, which covered the whole world.

  1. Man was wicked and so the Bible God decided to flood the earth and except for those on Noah’s boat, all others would be killed. Thus many men, women, animals, and plants would be killed (Genesis 6:5-13).

Why kill trillions of animals and plants for the sins of man?

      2. Noah was asked to build a boat that would accommodate his family and a pair of each species of animals. The boat was to be  300 cubits in length, 50 cubits in breadth, and height of 30 cubits (Genesis 6:15,18-20).

 1 cubit=1.5 feet

Based on the scientists, there are 7.77 million species of animals. It’s impossible to fit a pair of each species of animals on a boat of the above size.

The Bible does not mention anything about saving the plants which based on the scientists’ number 390,000 species. If the world is flooded, then all plant species would die.

     3. Noah was asked to take enough food on the boat to last at least 150 days for his family and all animals (Genesis 6:21, 7:24).

It is impossible to fit enough food on a boat of the above size to last 150 days for all the pairs of species of animals. For example, a single elephant needs an average of 150 kg of food and 40 liters of water a day. For 150 days this would be 22,500 kg of food for just one elephant. What about the dinosaurs? They need tons of meat daily.

The ocean water is salty and thus not drinkable. Noah’s boat would need to store billions of gallons of fresh water to last 150 days for all the 7.77 million species of animals. This is impossible for Noah’s boat due to its small size.

Al-Quran

The Quran supports the Noah’s ark story as a historical fact.

We, when the water (of Noah’s Flood) overflowed beyond its limits, carried you (mankind), in the floating (Ark),” (Al-Quran 69.11)

Then We saved him and those with him in the ship, and made it (the ship) as an Ayah (a lesson, a warning, etc.) for the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).” (Al-Quran 29.15)
