Vedic Self Control Advice

Vedic Self Control Advice

The below questions were asked by Yudhisthira and the answers were given by Bhisma. These great personalities lived 5000 years ago.

Q1. How should one react to people who insult you by their rudeness and arrogance?

A1.  If one does not become angry when insulted by another, then he takes away all the pious merit that person may have accumulated by good deeds. In addition he transfers to the abuser his own sinful reactions. After all what is the value of praise or blame when uttered by a vulgar fool? A person who praises some one in his presence but criticizes him behind his back is no better that a dog.

Q2.  How should one debate with an unscrupulous person?

A2.  In a debate the tactics of a truthful person are limited, but a deceitful person can utilize any abominable method. However if the truthful person were to use the same tactics as his opponent, he will find himself at a greater disadvantage, for he is acting contrary to his nature. Therefore a truthful and honest person should always avoid an argument with an unscrupulous person.

Q3. How should one behave towards a more powerful enemy?

A3. Even though the swift current of the river can uproot and carry huge trees, the canes survive since they bend with the current. Similarly in order to survive an enemy more powerful, one must yield while staying firmly anchored to the roots.

Q4. What should a weak person do if out of foolishness and pride he provokes a powerful enemy?

A4. O King, the weaker person must repent and thus appease the stronger enemy.

Q5. What is the origin of all sin?

A5. Greed, the hankering to posses more than one’s naturally ordained quota is the origin of all sin. The desire to posses that which belongs to another is insatiable and gives rise to anger, lust, loss of judgment, arrogance, miserliness, lack of compassion, enviousness, mistrust and many other evils. Ignorance is made up of the same material as greed, though if analyzed it can be seen that ignorance also comes from greed. As one’s greed increases, his ignorance also becomes more dense.

Q6. What produces the highest merit?

A6. Self-restraint surpasses all other activities in this regard and is therefore considered to be the highest virtue. Because self-restraint purifies and controls every aspect of one’s life it is more important than giving in charity and the study of the Vedas. By self-restraint alone one can achieve liberation from the material world. Self-restraint comprises sense-control, freedom from anger, non-enviousness, impartiality, truthfulness, steadiness and contentment.

However, the essential quality of self-restraint is austerity. Thus no good can be achieved without austerity.

Q7.  Is there any rule that should never be violated under any condition?

A7. The worship of true brahmans and giving them all kinds of respect must never be given up under any circumstance.

Everything is God’s Energy

Everything is God’s Energy

The scientists state the big bang theory. This is how they believe this universe began. But this causes a problem, because the scientists also state that matter and time is eternal. So how can there be a creation with matter and time having a beginning? Where did matter and time come from?

The scientists have no answer. Only the Bhagavad-Gita can answer these questions.

“My Self is the very source of creation.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 9.5)

What the scientists call creation is known as the material manifestation or the material world by Vedic terms.

Before the creation, time and matter existed in another form as energies of Lord Krishna. At creation, the matter changed from one form to another, basically what we see today, solid stones, planets, metal, and so on. This is also accepted by the scientists as the Law of Conservation. Energy cannot be destroyed but it can change forms.

So basically everything is the energy of Lord Krishna. The energies existed before creation and at creation, the energy changed from one form to another.

Only Lord Krishna existed before the Creation

Before creation there was nothing, this is what the scientists believe. The Bhagavad-Gita teaches that God is eternal and He existed before the creation.

“Brahma, it is I, the Personality of Godhead, who was existing before the creation, when there was nothing but Myself. ”  (Lord Krishna, Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.9.33)

Where did the matter and time come from to form the universe, what is known as the creation?

It comes from Lord Krishna (God). It is from Lord Krishna that everything comes. Time and matter are energies of Lord Krishna. That’s why time and matter is eternal, because Lord Krishna is eternal. His energies are also eternal.

“Material nature and the living entities should be understood to be beginningless.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 13.20)

The above verse confirms that matter and time (material nature) and souls are eternal.

“The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Time I am.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 11.32)

The above is another confirmation that time is the energy of Lord Krishna.

“This material nature, which is one of My energies, is working under My direction, O son of Kunti, producing all moving and nonmoving beings.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 9.10)

The above confirms that matter and time (material nature) are energies of Lord Krishna and they are working under His direction to create the planets, stones, metals, trees, animals and so on.

“The living entities in this conditioned world are My eternal fragmental parts.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 15.7)

The above verse confirms that living entities (souls) are eternal, because they are parts of the eternal God, Lord Krishna. Since Lord Krishna is eternal, His parts must also be eternal.

What do other religions teach?

The non-Vedic religions are very much against the theory that everything is God’s energies. Based on the Laws of Physics, matter and time is eternal and the Bhagavad-Gita explains that these are energies of God and thus everything is God (His energies). The non-Vedic teachings are non-scientific.

The energetic and the energy are one, so in one sense everything is God but this does not mean we can worship matter or time as God. Everything is the energy of God and based on what God (Lord Krishna) Himself states, we have to worship Him in His form of Krishna only and not His energies (matter and time).

“But those who always worship Me with exclusive devotion, meditating on My transcendental form.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 9.22)

The above verse confirms that we have to worship the form of Lord Krishna as God and not anything else.

“Engage your mind always in thinking of Me, become My devotee, offer obeisances to Me and worship Me. Being completely absorbed in Me, surely you will come to Me.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 9.34)

The above verse is another confirmation that we have to only worship Lord Krishna.

Creation is Cyclic

The Bhagavad-Gita teaches that creation is cyclic. There is creation, existence for some time, then destruction, and then re-creation. The scientists also accept that creation is cyclic.

“O son of Kunti, at the end of the millennium all material manifestations enter into My nature, and at the beginning of another millennium, by My potency, I create them again.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 9.7)

Millennium in the above verse means one Maha Kalpa. This is 311.040 trillion years. This is the lifespan of this universe. The universe is created, exists for 311.040 trillion years, and then everything is destroyed, there is un-manifestation for 311.040 trillion years, and then there is another creation. This cycle is repeated continuously and is related to Maha-Vishnu (an expansion of Lord Krishna). When He exhales, there is creation and existence and when He inhales, there is un-manifestation. The whole lifespan of the universe is just one breath of time for Maha-Vishnu. This is how great the real God, Lord Krishna is.

We are 155.522 trillion years into the current exhalation of Maha-Vishnu, this is the current age of the universe. We have another 155.518 trillion years to go before the end of the universe and the current cycle.

Don’t be deceived or fooled by those who say the end is near or these are last days.

“The whole cosmic order is under Me. Under My will it is automatically manifested again and again, and under My will it is annihilated at the end.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 9.8)

It is by the will of Lord Krishna that everything is created and destroyed, and not by the will of men who have recently created their ideologies.

Purpose of Creating Living Beings

Purpose of Creating Living Beings

Sanatan-Dharma Teaching

Based on Sanatan-Dharma, there is no question of creating living entities (souls). We are all eternally existing and our purpose is to enjoy a personal companion relationship with God.

“The living entities in this conditioned world are My eternal fragmental parts..” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 15.7)

“All living beings are but part of the Supreme, or, in other words, that they are Mine..” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 4.35)

The Bhagavad-Gita teaches that we are the soul and not this temporary body. The soul is eternal and part of the eternal God, Lord Krishna. All living entities (souls) are part of Lord Krishna. We are all the children of Krishna and He wants to see all His children in complete bliss and with Him in His kingdom.

“Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be. As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 2.12-13)

Based on Islam, man is the slave of Allah. The Bhagavad-Gita teaches that all living entities are eternal companions of Lord Krishna. This means everyone, including the souls in plant and animal bodies are eternal companions of God and not His slaves. Lord Krishna is truly all merciful and gracious.

“O most intelligent Uddhava, the living entity, called jīva, is part and parcel of Me, but due to ignorance he has been suffering in material bondage since time immemorial. By knowledge, however, he can be liberated.” (Lord Krishna, Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.11.4)

Spiritual Manifestation

Originally every single soul was in the Kingdom of God called Vaikuntha, the spiritual manifestation. Where everyone had a position serving and enjoying a personal relationship with Lord Krishna or His expansions. This is the companion relationship which every soul has with God.

Material Manifestation

We are not the slaves of God, because we have free will. All souls have free will, and when a soul thinks he is the enjoyer and not an eternal companion of Lord Krishna, he falls from the spiritual manifestation to the material manifestation for material life to lord it over.

“The living entity in the material world carries his different conceptions of life from one body to another, as the air carries aromas. Thus he takes one kind of body and again quits it to take another.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 15.8)

In the material manifestation the soul resides in a body which is called the living being. There are 8.4 species of living beings or bodies that a soul can occupy. The soul transmigrates from one body to another based on his desires and deserves. When the soul in a human body engages in devotional service unto Lord Krishna, he can go back to the spiritual manifestation and resume his eternal companionship relationship with God.

Based on Islam, Allah is not omnipresent. He is not present everywhere. The Bhagavad-Gita teaches that Lord Krishna is omnipresent, He is present everywhere, including within His Deity form.

“Although I am the maintainer of all living entities and although I am everywhere, I am not a part of this cosmic manifestation, for My Self is the very source of creation.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 9.5)

Personal Service to God with Deity Worship

“The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Those who fix their minds on My personal form and are always engaged in worshiping Me with great and transcendental faith are considered by Me to be most perfect.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 12.2)

Among the living beings, only the human species have a chance to understand and personally serve God. This is called Deity worship, which is of personal benefit to God directly. Lord Krishna is real, He has a form which is most beautiful and most opulent. Deity worship entails offering flowers, water, and food items to the real, seen, and proven God, Lord Krishna. The Deities are not idols, God is personally present within each and every Deity in every Temple, and millions of humans have personally seen or experienced the presence of God within the Deities.

If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, I will accept it.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 9.26)

Some of the Deities of Lord Krishna in Temples are actual transformations of Lord Krishna. He actually appeared and transformed Himself into the Deity form so He can be personally worshiped.

Lord Krishna personally accepts what His pure devotees offer to His Deity form. By placing water or food items near Deities. He actually drinks and eats the food, but God is not like us. When we eat, the food disappears, but when Lord Krishna eats, the food is completely eaten but still it’s there in complete. This is spirituality, in the spiritual realm, 1 minus 1 is 1. Lord Krishna can eat simply by glancing; He can also eat with His mouth. At the request of His pure devotees, Lord Krishna has also eaten the food and made it disappear so we can perceive His presence, millions of times. On mother’s day, the children will take money from the mother and buy her flowers and this pleases her very much. In a similar way, by offering water, flower, and food to God. This gives us an opportunity to thank and serve Him. Lord Krishna is not hungry for food, He is hungry for a loving exchange between us and Him.

Personal Service to God by Chanting His Names

Qualities of Krishna entity – Lord Krishna is omnipresent (present everywhere). He has the most beautiful form. He is eternal, full of bliss, full of knowledge, most loving, most forgiving, most merciful, most opulent, and most generous. He likes to perform His transcendental pastimes with humans and animals.

Like in Islam, there is also chanting of God’s name in Sanatan-Dharma, but the difference is that there is real benefit to chanting the names of an entity who has a form, is omnipresent, and who is the whole and we are His parts, Lord Krishna.

“He who meditates on Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, his mind constantly engaged in remembering Me, undeviated from the path, he, O Partha, is sure to reach Me.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 8.8)

Just as a baby cries for the mother and this pleases the mother, because this gives her the chance to hold the baby, which increases the love and affection for both. This is mainly because the baby is part of the mother. In a similar way, we are all part of Krishna and thus by calling out His name (chanting), we the parts of Krishna, increase our love for Him. And just as a mother gives her baby comfort after being called. By chanting or calling out the name of Krishna, we get the comfort of attaining His love and His qualities. This is a guarantee which He makes for His devotees. Thus one will go back to the spiritual abode and get a body that is most beautiful, full of bliss, full of knowledge and eternal. Even in the material manifestation, a person who becomes Krishna conscious will attain His qualities of being loving, forgiving, and merciful to all. Thus there is real benefit to calling out the name of an entity like Krishna.

“He quickly becomes righteous and attains lasting peace.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita 9.31)

Based on Islam, some people are eternally sent to hell to suffer. The Bhagavad-Gita teaches that all living entities are eternal companions of Lord Krishna. Not a single soul is ever sent to eternal hell. Every single soul will eventually go back to the spiritual manifestation and once again enjoy a personal companion relationship with God. Lord Krishna is truly all merciful and gracious.

Thus there is a real purpose to our existence based on Sanatan-Dharma teachings, we are all personal companions of God and our service to Him via Deity worship is of personal benefit to God directly. And our chanting the names of Krishna, is of real benefit to us and Him. The plant and animal bodies exist to satisfy the desires and deserves of the soul in human bodies. When humans become aggressive or ignorant, they take birth in the plant and animal kingdoms so they can practice their aggressive and ignorant behavior in an ideal body. Lord Krishna benefits from the existence of animals because they also take part in His pastimes when He appears on this and other planets to enjoy a personal companion relationship with God.

Islamic Teaching

“I did not create Jinn and Men except that they may worship me” (Koran 51:56)

Based on the Quran, humans were created by God so they can worship him. The living entities (souls) are not eternal, the soul is created along with the body in this life. This basically means we are the body and we never existed before this life. Worshiping God in Islam is bowing down and calling out the name of Allah.

Allah Entity – The followers of Islam believe that Allah is formless. This means he has no form, he is invisible, unknown, unseen, and not describable. Allah is not omnipresent (not present everywhere). He is situated above the seven heavens (References: Quran 35:10, 6:18,61 16:50, 112:4).

What benefit does Allah get from humans on Earth bowing down and calling out his name?

What benefit would a King get if his citizens were to bow down and call out his name when the King is out of Town?

What benefit would you get if people who are situated far away from you were to bow down and call out your name?

The Muslims are certainly sincere in their belief of God, which is a very good quality. Even if a person is present before us and we bow down to him, this gives him some pleasure, because we are acknowledging his presence, which is a good thing but of little personal benefit. If a person is not situated before us, and we bow down to him, this gives no personal benefit, especially if the person has no personal relationship with God (not a part of Him).

Christian Teaching

The Bible does not directly answer the question of why God created living beings. The Christians will give differing answers based on their own assumptions and thoughts. They can only speculate, because their God does not answer this question directly. One should not accept speculative answers.

What Happened To One Who Wanted To Kill The Vedic Culture

What Happened to One who wanted to kill the Vedic Culture

This is a short version of a real life event that took place many millions of years ago. This is documented in the Vedic scripture called Srimad-Bhagavatam (Canto 7, chapter 3).

Hiranyakashipu was a person who wanted to become very powerful. He found out that by performing severe penances for Brahma (engineer of the universe) for some time, he could be granted boons which would make him immortal. So he performed severe penances and after completing them, Brahma was satisfied, and asked him what boons he wanted.

Hiranyakashipu asked for the following boons:

1. He could not be killed any man
2. He could not be killed by any animal
3. He could not be killed in the air
4. He could not be killed in the water
5. He could not be killed inside a building
6. He could not be killed outside a building
7. He could not be killed in the daytime
8. He could not be killed in the nighttime
9. He could not be killed by any weapon
10. He could not be killed by any tool
11. He could not be killed during the 12 months of the year

He was granted all the above boons by Brahma. By attaining the boons, Hiranyakashipu thought he had become immortal. Anyone would think that with the above boons, one would become immortal. But one does not know how intelligent Lord Vishnu, the real God is, as we shall see below.

On attaining the boons, he became very nasty in his dealings with everyone and considered himself as the one and only God. He ordered people to only worship him as the true God and reject Lord Vishnu (Krishna). He ordered Vedic rituals and worship to be stopped and ordered Vedic priests to be put to death and so on.

Hiranyakashipu had a son named Prahlad, who was a pure devotee of Lord Vishnu. When Hiranyakashipu heard that his son was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. He ordered him to his palace and told him that he was the only God and to stop worshipping Vishnu. His son, Prahlad, refused to accept this. The angry Hiranyakashipu challenged Prahlad and asked him where his Vishnu was. Prahlad replied “My Lord Vishnu is omnipresent and there is not a single place where is not found”. The furious Hiranyakashipu got up from his throne and asked Prahlad “Is your Vishnu present in this pillar?” Prahlad said “Yes, He is!” Hiranyakashipu said “I will kill your Vishnu”. He hit the pillar very hard with a mace, thinking that this will kill Vishnu. As the pillar was hit, the pillar cracked and Lord Vishnu appeared from the pillar in the form of Lord Narasimha – He was half man and half lion form. The furious Lord Narasimha grabbed Hiranyakashipu, pulled him onto his lap and ripped open his body with his claws and killed Hiranyakashipu.

Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu, keeping all the boons intact as follows:

1. He could not be killed any man – Lord Narasimha was not a man
2. He could not be killed by any animal – Lord Narasimha was not an animal
3. He could not be killed in the air – Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu on his lap, not in air
4. He could not be killed in the water – Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu on his lap, not in the water.
5. He could not be killed inside a building – Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu on a window edge, not inside a building
6. He could not be killed outside a building – Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu on a window edge, not outside a building
7. He could not be killed in the daytime – Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu at sunset, not in daytime
8. He could not be killed in the nighttime – Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu at sunset, not in the night
9. He could not be killed by any weapon ¬- Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu with His nails, this is not considered a weapon
10. He could not be killed by any tool – Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu with His nails, this is not considered a tool
11. He could not be killed during the 12 months of the year – Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu during the 13th month (Purushottam Maas). In the Vedic calendar, every 3 years, there is one extra month, this is considered the 13th month. When Hiranyakashipu asked for the 12 months boon, he forgot that every 3 years there is one extra month.

This real life story illustrates how intelligent the real God, Lord Vishnu (Krishna) is and shows what will happen to all those who oppose, or try to destroy the Vedic culture, and those who offend the devotees of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu is the real, seen, and proven God. He protects His devotees and destroys the demonic.

There are no cases like the above in other religions. When the real God appears and personally protects and saves His devotees. This is because there is only one God, Lord Vishnu.  He is most merciful and everyone can be protected and saved if they serve and worship Him.

What can humans learn from the trees?

What can humans learn from the trees?

– The trees are able to stand in one place all their life, because they do not read the newspapers which are full of non-sense events around the world which only disturb the mind and thus one is not able to stand still.

– The trees are able to stand in one place all their life, because they do not have a cell phone. The cell phone constantly rings and causes the mouth to vibrate and spit out non-sense words (talk) which only disturbs the mind and thus one is not able to stand still.

– The trees are able to stand in one place all their life, because they do not have an email account. So many non-sense emails come and go which only disturb the mind and thus one is not able to stand still.

– The trees are able to stand in one place all their life, because they do not have a face book account. Social media accounts are more addictive than drugs. One cannot stand still for a moment without wondering who has said what on their face book account.

– The trees are able to stand in one place all their life, because they do not chase the opposite sex. Male humans are like male donkeys. The female donkey kicks the male donkey on the face and this is taken as complimentary by the male donkeys, who want even more.

– The trees are able to stand in one place all their life, because they do not go on shopping spree to buy useless items which only makes them more materialistic and binds them to material life.

– The trees are able to stand in one place all their life, because they are so tolerant. Dogs pee on them, people cut them down, the harsh weather freezes or burns them, but still the trees do not protest. Humans cannot stand still because they are full of intolerance towards others.

– The trees are able to stand in one place all their life, because they are free from ego. They are not envious of others, they are not jealous of others. The humans cannot still because they are full of ego and thus their mind is always flickering and in anxiety.

– The trees are able to stand in one place all their life, because they allow others to exist freely. They believe in free will, freedom of thought, freedom of beliefs, and freedom of expression. The humans cannot stand still because they believe their way is the only way and thus cannot tolerate others.
